Day 5 Piran, Slovenia

Our ship docked in Koper but we opted to take a taxi in order to visit Piran (or Pirano in Italian) the most romantic place on the coast. The town is seen as the best preserved cultural monument of Slovenian Istria. Piran is the southernmost of the three villages and long belonged to Venice. This is clearly reflected in Venetian Gothic buildings and the pleasant atmosphere. Narrow medieval streets, a cozy main square and the old church at the point of the peninsula are the most beautiful sights.

Piran sticks out a bit, and that means that you have a beautiful view of the sea and the Alps in the distance. From Piran you can see four countries at the same time: Croatia, Austria, Italy and Slovenia itself. Some of the most important sights are the Cathedral of Saint George, the Tartini Square and the old city walls.

The taxi dropped us off at Tartini Square, which is the largest and main square in the town of Pian. The square was named after violinist and composer Guiseppe Tartini, of whom a monument was made in 1896. We counted walking uphill to the Cathedral of Saint George and also climbed up the Bell Tower, for some nice panoramic views of Piran.

We continued walking the Old City Walls, and after that we had lunch (Pizza). After lunch we decided to visit the port, where we saw a lot of fisher boats. We went back in to the narrow streets of Piran and I spotted an Ice Cream shop, the rest was culinary history.
