Venice, Italy

Venice is one of the most visited cities in Italy. The combination of a rich history and therefore many interesting sights make Venice a popular destination. The "unique selling point" of Venice is of course the location of the old town on islands in a lagoon, where the transport is forced by water. The many canals and the beautiful Venetian Gondolas have a huge attraction for tourists from all over the world.

After parking our car at one of the Car Parkings at Piazzale Roma we headed for out Airbnb in Venice. We packed rather light as we were only staying for 2 days, which made for easy travelling without big trolleys or suitcases. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side and it rained pretty much all day. We did not let the rain stop and after checking in to the Airbnb we headed for a small city walk.

We decided it was time for some espresso at one of the many coffee bars in Venice. We took a double espresso at Goppion Caffetteria and after that continued walking to Birraria La Corte for some local Craft Beers. We remained at Birraria La Corte for dinner and had a nice Pinot Noir wine. For dessert we decided to buy some Mini Magnums and relax at the Airbnb. We all agreed to get up early next morning and hope for a beautiful sunrise at the Ponte Delle Accademia.

We had to get up early and make our way to the Ponte Delle Accademia. Once we arrived (05:45), there were already a group of photographers setting up to capture the sunrise. Unfortunately we did not see much colour in the sky, but I managed to make some great photo's the grand canal with the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in the background. After the sunrise shoot we were in heavy need for coffee and breakfast Canoli's and on the way we bought them at Farini. We then continued our way to visit San Marco Basilica.

We ate our breakfast on the San Marco square, the doves also wanted to participate. We wanted to drink a cola on the square too, but we were a bit drawn back when we saw the price list. We then disposed our backpacks at a special storage unit next to the San Marco Basilica as they were not allowed inside. So be mindful of this when visiting the San Marco Basilica.

Admission to the Basilica is free, but we also visited the Treasury (Tesoro in Italian) the admission for this was €3,00 a person. The treasury is filled with amongst other thing, holy bones, relics and jewels. We also visited the museum, which costs €5,00. The museum leads you up a staircase bring you even closer to the mosaics.

Luckily the sun decided to show up and we walked passed the Bridge of Sighs. We then tried to get lost in the narrow streets of Venice, until we got hungry and decided it was time (11:00) for food. At Catina do Mori we had some different kinds of snacks. The food was all tasty, but more so because of the reasonable price. Same goes for the wine. Octopus, cheese, spicy sausage, and refreshing house wine or beers. It’s worth a visit just for the food, but the history makes it even more special.

We kept wandering through this beautiful city and stumbled upon Gelatoteca Suso, an Ice cream shop. We obviously couldn't resist the temptation.. Still hungry we decided to have a Pizza and Aperol stop at Trattoria Ali d'ora Pizzeria.

After our lunch we headed out to see an important sight on our list, the Ponte delle Tette. The Ponte Delle Tette is a small bridge on the rio di san Canciano in the parish of San Cassiano, Venice, Italy. It takes its name ("Bridge of the Tits") from the use of the bridge by prostitutes, who were encouraged to stand topless on the bridge and in nearby windows to entice and convert suspected homosexuals. We tried to relive those days, sitting in the sun and with a bottle of red wine. We were pretty hammered after that, an Italian pocket coffee helped with our after lunch dip. We had to find a bar with a toilet as my friend had to go number 2 real fast.

We bought some Parma ham at local shop on the corner of Corte Rota and Calle Longa and sat down a bit further at the Easy Bar for our last cup of coffee in Venice.
